Mid-September sees the Engelweihe event in Einsiedeln Monastery celebrated with a procession of lights.
The ceremony marks the consecration of the monastery's Chapel of Our Lady. According to a medieval legend, Jesus Christ personally consecrated the chapel in honour of his mother Mary in 948. Christ is said to have appeared to Bishop Konrad of Constance accompanied by angels.
As a consequence, every year on 13 and 14 September, the monks of Einsiedeln Monastery celebrate the consecration of the Chapel of Our Lady with celebratory services and a procession featuring the Eucharist. During the procession of lights, countless candles adorn the facades of the abbey, the arcades, the Fountain of Our Lady and private houses on the large square in front of the monastery.
